The Nigerian music space has no doubt witnessed immense growth for the past few years. Its sounds and style have diversified, and its influence has gone way beyond the shores of Africa.
So far, 2023 has been laid an incredible landmark for Nigerian music, with lots of artists churning out great music and albums that have left fans awestruck.
In this blog article, we will take a glance at the top five masterpiece albums that have been released in the year so far, while we await what lies in store for us.
Hoyah! Let’s count down
- Top Boy- DJ Spinall
Who doesn’t know Spinall? I doubt if anyone doesn’t know that industry name.
The renowned Nigerian Disc Jockey, who released his album this year, titled it after his signature name “Top Boy”. The album features top Nigerian artists like Asake, Adekunle Gold, Niniola, and Fireboy.
Of course, we all knew what to expect from a “Top Boy” album that features top artists. Top quality! Top vibes! Spinall didn’t disappoint. The album perfectly blended Afrobeats, R&B, and Hip Hop.
Standout Tracks: Cloud 9 Ft Adekunle Gold, Sere Ft Fireboy DML, and Pallazo Ft Asake.
- Big Time- Rexxie
Rexxie Mapami nau! Of course, if you are a fan of street and club music, you’ll agree with me that this guy is a bomb! Since his arrival into the Nigerian mainstream music industry, in 2019 or there, Rexxie has carved out a name and niche for himself. A niche no one can dare drag with him.
The music producer released his album, titled “Big Time” in 2023 too, which features top superstar artists like Wizkid, Naira Marley, and Lojay. The album perfectly blended Afrobeats, Amapiano, and Hip-Hop.
Standout Track: Abracadabra Ft Wizkid, Naira Marley and Skibii
- Continental Playlist – King Perry
One day maybe this guy will explain more about this his favorite slang “Continental”. It definitely should have another meaning that we don’t know. In furtherance of his continental journey, King Perry released his usual continental sounds, which he titled “Continental Playlist”. The album is an electrifying blend of Afrobeats, Reggae, drill, and Pop, and features great artists like Tekno, Victony, Ria Sean, and 1da Banton.
The album testifies to Perry’s musical dexterity and has enjoyed massive accolades from fans.
- Pheel Good- Pheelz
Pheelz, the Music producer! I remember those glorious days of Olamide Adedeji. This guy produced almost 70% of those Baddo’s banging sounds.
In recent times, however, we have seen a very different side of Pheelz. He has shown us another side of himself, aside from producing music. And maybe, someday we would debate on which he is better. The music or the producing. But In general, the dude is extra talented.
He recently released his “Pheel Good” album, which features top collaborations with Davido and BNXN (Formerly known as Buju).
Standout Tracks: Finesse Ft BNXN and Electricity Ft Davido.
- Timeless- Davido
Who else would we have reserved the number one spot for, if not Omo Baba Olowo himself? After taking a break from the music scene, he returned and once again cemented his place as one of Nigeria’s greatest artists ever, with the “Timeless” album.
The 17-track masterpiece released on March 31st, 2023 features top artists like Angelique Kidjo, Asake Skepta, Focalistic, and The Cavemen and emerging artists like Morravey and Logos Olori, who are the latest signees of Davido’s 30BG label.
Standout Tracks: Unavailable Ft Musa Keys, Competition Ft Asake, Kante Ft Fave, and Away.
Which of these masterpieces is your favorite?
