Nigerian female musicians have always elevated the standard in terms of gaining international recognition for their songs. Things were never the same thereafter, and stars were born. Women have succeeded in an era and society filled with devastating prejudice.

Nigeria boasts one of the world’s largest music industries, thanks to its talented musicians who never stop producing engaging tunes. They portray a bright picture of the country internationally as one of Africa’s best.

1. Tiwa Savage

Tiwa Savage is one of the biggest pop talents to come out of West Africa in the 2010s, with a slew of songs and worldwide accolades to her credit. She began her career as a backing vocalist and songwriter in the music industry, and in the early 2010s, she debuted with a mix kind of dance-pop that combines Afro-pop, reggae, as well as modern R&B, while singing in both English and Yoruba.

Savage, who was already a great success when her debut album Once Upon a Time was released in 2013, continued to release hits throughout the next decade and increased her global reach by performing at foreign festivals and venues.

After leaving Mavin Records owing to the expiration of her contract, Tiwa Savage signed a record deal with Universal Music Group. She’s been nominated for a number of prizes around the world. She has worked with a number of local and international stars.
 
2. Yemi Alade

Yemi Alade, who is a Nigerian songwriter and Afro-pop singer, in 2009 was the winner of the renowned Peak Talent. Yemi Alade was born in Abia – south-eastern Nigeria, pursued her musical dreams while studying at the University of Lagos, and later that year, she released her debut single “Fimisile” after winning the popular Peak competition.

The 2013 international breakthrough single “Johnny,” which was included on her debut album, King of Queens, in 2014, was the result of a partnership with the Effyzzie Music Group. The album featured a variety of collaborations between famous producers and guest performers like Phyno and Chidinma, and was a combination of reggae, R&B, rap, and Afro-pop.

Mama Africa, as she is fondly called, is a well-known female musician in Nigeria. She landed a collaboration with Oscar winner and Grammy winner Angelique Kidjo, a Beninese singer-songwriter of Nigerian heritage.

Shekere by Yemi Alade has over 9 million views on YouTube alone. She also recorded a song called “Oh My Gosh,” which included Rick Ross, an international rapper.

3. Seyi Shay

Seyi Shay began her singing career at the age of six. Her late mother, as well as her siblings, who were all musicians and members of various musical ensembles, showered her with encouragement and motivation.

Shay’s first record deal was with No Apology Records, which is owned by George Martin. In 2006, the girl band Boadicea was formed.

In July 2015, Seyi signed an international record deal with Universal Island Records UK, which would release her music worldwide. Her musical abilities and knowledge lead her to work with some of the world’s most well-known performers, including Justin Timberlake.

4. Waje

Waje’s distinctive vocal range is well-known. She was a member of a choir and had been singing since she was a teenager before entering the music industry.

Waje has also shared the stage with international acts such as Wyclef Jean and Kerry Hilson. Waje has had considerable success in a variety of musical genres. Her professional career began when she joined the east coast-based Dome record label.

5. Niniola

Niniola Apata, better known as Niniola, is another well-known musician. She is a strong music performer that exudes charisma and vigor in her performances.  The singer’s inclusion on the list is the outcome of her hard work and creativity. She, too, got her start after competing in MTN’s Project Fame Talent event.

She has earned a lot of international music acclaim outside of Nigeria, and her song was featured on Drake’s playlist. She has a long list of accolades under her belt, including a nomination for Viewer’s Choice Best International Act at the 2018 BET Awards. The singer and performer has been incredible, as she continues to release party jams for fans and listeners while keeping the entertainment scene alive.
